Along the way!
Years ago, I heard my PoP deliver a message titled "The things we learned along the way or miracles along the way." In the sermon, as usual, he shared several insights. One of the insights was how most of the miracles Jesus performed during his earthly walk happened along the way. 2/3 of it occurred as he was transitioning or moving between places. Many times, Bible students would recall that scripture would document that XYZ happened as he was going. PoP said everything occurred because God is trying to teach us something about Life. Most of the time, for God and in Life, it is not so much about the destination; it is the things that happen and the lessons we learn along the way. Each miracle occurred in different ways with different people, places, and purposes, and these miracles taught us lessons that we knew because they happened along the way.
It is not just the destination, but also the beauty of the journey. The real joy of a road trip is what you see and what happens along the way. When Jacob became a fugitive, running away from the wrath of his brother, whose blessing he stole, it was not so much about getting to Ephratha as the things that happened along the way. When Moses ran away from Egypt, it was not so much about his destination, the house of Jethro, but the things he learned along the way. When Jesus died, and the two men travelled on the road to Emmaus and encountered him, it was not so much about their journey but the things he taught them about himself and his resurrection along the way.
PoP said it is not about the place and the things you desire, but the things that happen along the way. It is what we learned about God in the course of our journey on earth, not necessarily our destination, that matters. PoP said that just like Jesus, along the way, miracles, Life is what happens between the dash that separates your birth date from your death date and the lesson you learn in between. A lot happens along the way, between Life and death, conception and birth, the beginning of a year, a month, a week, a day, and the end.
In between Life , the beginning of 2023, and this month of December, I learned many things along the way. I learned so many things about people, places, my ancestors and events that I cannot share because I am still a student in this classroom called Life. But I can write what I am learning about God because you cannot fully master or learn him.
I learned he won't joke me around.
I learned he makes wet wood to burn
I learned he won't leave me an orphan.
I learned he is "Agbomola ti kii gba omo pa" (the one who does not rescue to kill).
I learned he is bigger than my fears, anxieties and uncertainties
I learned grief, depression, and disappointment cannot have the last say
I learned he is a healer
I learned I can "dance with broken bones" with God and my ancestors.
When I read a professor's post about attending a particular conference at a later part of his graduate school but he ensured his graduate students attended from first year. I learned to pass the lesson, not the pain, a template, not temper and tantrums.
I am learning many lessons along the way.
What are you learning along the way?
Whatever the lessons, "own the lesson," as SJR has taught us lately.
